When China succeeded in its bid for the 2008 Olympic Games, the Beijing Organising Committee pledged its commitment to ensure that the event would be the greenest yet.  In pursuing this commitment, ISO 14001:2004 has been playing a vital role, allowing the provision for energy conservation, green construction materials, water resource protection, waste disposal and noise reduction to name a few.

In the Olympic Village, bath water will be heated and street lighting powered  by solar energy and rain and grey water systems will operate in many of the venues.  Other measures such as the prevention and reduction of pollution during construction and the granting of awards to those sites that make the most effort to follow green principles are being implemented.

Beijing City itself is in full support of the Olympic Committee’s aims and is using the event as an opportunity to accelerate its economic development, urban construction and living standards whilst at the same time improving the environment.
